THE JULIAN SUMMIT, KILCULLEN, IRELAND

REPORT ON EDITING JULIAN OF NORWICH

rom 2-10 September 1998, three publishing Julian scholars met together in Ireland, one already living there, another coming from America through storms which delayed her flight, the third coming from Italy. Sisters Anna Maria Reynolds, C.P ., Ritamary Bradley , and Julia Bolton Holloway worked together on a two volume edition of the extant manuscripts of the Showings of Julian of Norwich. On 9 September they were joined byAmbrose Tinsley , O.S.B., himself the author of a book on Julian of Norwich, who drove over from nearby Benedictine Glenstall Abbey to join them. The tables in the parlour of the Cross and Passion Convent in St Bridget's Kilcullen, County Kildare, during that week, piled up with books, manuscripts, microfilms, and were always graced by Father Nathanael's icon of Julian of Norwich.

We were very much living Julian's own context of prayer, sometimes adjourning to say the Rosary in chapel amidst Irish voices, sometimes interrupting our work to say the Angelus, led by Sister Anna Maria, and always joining the Sisters for Matins, Mass, and Vespers. One day we went in search of St Bridget's Well. Otherwise we were intensely working at this project together, checking the text and the translation over and over again, discussing its points and its contexts, and marvelling at the team of women scribes and editors who had preceded us, centuries upon centuries of nuns' careful work, preserving a treasured text within first Brigittine, then Benedictine cloisters, at first in England, then in exile on the Continent.

A preview of the work can be seen in the essay on this Website, Julian's Showing of Love in a Nutshell: Her Manuscripts and Their Contexts.

Sister Anna Maria Reynolds C.P. is the greatest editor Julian ever had. During the war years she was transcribing the extant microfilms with a microscope, a word at a time, for her Leeds University MA and Ph.D. theses. Subsequent editions are based on her meticulous work. Now in her nineties, blind, frail, she has created a fine CD in which she discusses Julian with total recall of the text. It can be obtained for 12 euro from her at Cross and Passion Convent, 22 Griffith Avenue, Marino, Dublin 9, EIRE.
